Attrackting weary travelers looking for a nice bed and a warm bath, the Astor House Museum will draw you in the same hospitality and warmth.

Operating during the Colorado Gold Rush, the Astor House saw many miners, legislators, and in later years, students from Colorado School of Mines. Located on 12th St, the Astor House is right in the heart of Golden. Enjoy learning holiday crafts or Victorian games in the boarding house as it has been trimmed and decorated for the holidays.

Occurring every Tuesday through Saturday throughout December, you can bring the whole family visiting from out-of-town! Afterward, take the family for a stroll near the water to visit another of Golden’s great Museums, the Clear Creek History Park. Open Wednesday through Saturday, the Astor House Museum shows how history still lives in Golden!

Habitat for Humanity has made a name for itself by building simple, decent and affordable homes. Celebrating the 1000th home built in Colorado, Habitat for Humanity has joined the “upcycle” movement by opening various restores in the Colorado area. Since it’s inception in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has focused on building their homes with locally appropriate materials. The addition of the Restores allows homeowners, contractors, designers, and builders the opportunity to use perfectly good, previously owned materials.

This picture was taken from Little Birdie Secrets

Every Restore is a little different! Most focus on home improvement goods like furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances, however like any resale shop there are some gems to be found. The materials are donated by individuals and companies that no longer need them, or are updating their properties. This keeps these working materials from entering the waste management system, giving them a new life and a new home. The heart of the upcycling movement is using previously owned materials. The beauty of upcycling is in how the previously own materials do not have to be used in their original form. Antique doors can be turned into dinner tables. Chair legs can be turned into handrails. Furniture can be re-upholstered and floors can be made of reclaimed wood.

Imagine the opportunities! With nineteen locations in the Colorado area, your home improvement projects can get off of the ground for half of the original estimated price. Don’t have a home to improve? We can help with that too; here are some homes available now in the Golden area!

However, Clear Creek heads North East to connect with the Platte River and has walking/biking paths along the way. These quiet spots are perfect year round for family friendly activities like fly fishing or panning for gold! Fly fishing is a popular past time in the area. There are perfect spots up or down from the rapids that are serene and beautiful, without being far from the paths and parking. Clear Creek has healthy populations of rainbows, browns, and in higher stretches, cutthroat. Are you a fly fishing novice? Classes are available here. Depending on the weather, there are different times during the day that provide the best fishing. Remember, Clear Creek water comes from Loveland pass, so dress accordingly and if the area is snow covered or icy make sure to watch your step!

Gold panning has come back to the Golden area in a big way. Although Colorado is known as the Silver State, it also ranks second among the gold producing states. Over 40 million ounces of gold have been produced in Colorado! Golden is a town built during the Gold rush and there are reports every so often of people finding significant amounts in Clear Creek. Panning is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon with the family. Stop by Gold-n-Detectors downtown for supplies or more information about the area. Depending on where you go outside of the downtown Golden area, make sure to stay on public property. Pans and other tools may get confiscated if you are trespassing. Also, water levels can change often depending on how much snow is received in the area so check before you go for any areas that may be closed due to high water levels. Parking is located at Lions Park, the ballfields and adjacent areas. Vanover Park is also available for parking and provides a take-out site for those continuing downstream.

Golden is lucky to have an 800 feet section that highlights great areas for tubing, kayaking, panning, fishing, and wading. Created in 1998, the Clear Creek park has a series of drops and pools of different experience levels and has some fast eddies. The middle and bottom sections have more extreme surf waves and drops with huge random boulders. The city of Golden “requires paddlers to be proficient on fast moving, cold water, particularly during high flow season.” This year Clear Creek received record levels and was closed for recreational use, so make sure you check the availability of the park.

If you are thinking about trying something less technical, then tubing is the answer for you! Tubes can be purchased or rented from local outdoor retailers and tire shops. Although tubing is a less technical way of spending a day on the creek, it is by no means any less dangerous! Make sure to check out the rapids before you go so you know what you are getting into. Remember to be courteous to other people in the water like fisherman and kayakers. There are no fees for drop-in usage and the course is unsupervised. Personal flotation devices and helmets are highly recommended! Parking is located at Lions Park, the ballfields and adjacent areas. Vanover Park is also available for parking and provides a take-out site for those continuing downstream after maneuvering the course.

Although smaller than that other brewery, they make up for it with great service, delicious beer, and a welcoming atmosphere. According to their website, Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home). The carriage house has become the tasting room, the backyard is the beer garden. Located on Cheyenne St between 11th and 12th St, it is easy to see why this is so popular among the locals. Once you grab your beers (don’t forget to grab some pretzels and hot mustard too) from inside or the window in the back, find yourself a seat at one of the picnic or patio tables. Don’t see a spot? As part of that welcoming community feel, people will often make room or invite you to sit with them. Children and dogs are welcome to come and play too! Open in rain or shine, the hours vary so make sure to give them a call before you go.

The first shootout took place in 1860 and it has been said that the ghosts of some of these men are still around. In 1917, when Coloradoans voted for Prohibition the restaurant continued to stay open by selling soft drinks and continued with liquor when Prohibition was appealed. Now the building has been remodeled and ready to continue the legacy of a Colorado Landmark.” If you are hungry, join The Rose for excellent lunch and dinner specials and three full bars with nightly drink specials.
