As part of decorating the home for the holiday season, many people pull out their favorite train set! Trains have always been a big part of the holidays. Golden is lucky to have the Colorado Railroad Museum nearby, with a wonderful line up of special events for the whole family.

Starting December 3rd, the Colorado Railroad Museum will host none other than Santa and Mrs. Clause! According to the museum, Santa has decided this year to give the reindeers a night off and wants to take the train instead. The historic passenger cars have hall been decked out to the occasion!! Santa and Mrs. Clause will be there for you to share your wish list and the Depot General Store will be serving hot chocolate. If you like the diesel or steam powered trains you see, there are plenty of railroad toys at the Depot as well, including Thomas the Tank Engine.

Gold panning has come back to the Golden area in a big way. Although Colorado is known as the Silver State, it also ranks second among the gold producing states. Over 40 million ounces of gold have been produced in Colorado! Golden is a town built during the Gold rush and there are reports every so often of people finding significant amounts in Clear Creek. Panning is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon with the family. Stop by Gold-n-Detectors downtown for supplies or more information about the area. Depending on where you go outside of the downtown Golden area, make sure to stay on public property. Pans and other tools may get confiscated if you are trespassing. Also, water levels can change often depending on how much snow is received in the area so check before you go for any areas that may be closed due to high water levels. Parking is located at Lions Park, the ballfields and adjacent areas. Vanover Park is also available for parking and provides a take-out site for those continuing downstream.

Created in 1998, the Clear Creek park  has a series of drops and pools of different experience levels and has some fast eddies. The middle and bottom sections have more extreme surf waves and drops with huge random boulders. If you are thinking about trying something less technical, then tubing is the answer for you! Tubes can be purchased or rented from local outdoor retailers and tire shops. Although tubing is a less technical way of spending a day on the creek, it is by no means any less dangerous! Make sure to check out the rapids before you go so you know what you are getting into. Remember to be courteous to other people in the water like fisherman and kayakers. There are no fees for drop-in usage and the course is unsupervised. Personal flotation devices and helmets are highly recommended! Parking is located at Lions Park, the ballfields and adjacent areas. Vanover Park is also available for parking and provides a take-out site for those continuing downstream after maneuvering the course.

According to their website, Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home).
